"I have never gotten involved in Lennox school board politics but want to urge Lennox residents (parents, former students …) to vote for Marisol Cruz in the upcoming school board election. Here is why…your vote counts!
I taught marine science, biology and physio-anatomy at Ánimo Leadership Charter high school for 13 years. I was the science department chairperson, a union activist and defended students’ rights. During that time, I assisted several thousand students gain admission to college, get jobs and take them on unique field trips thru class-wide and Marine biology club activities to expand their view of the world.
I first met Marisol when she came to defend Ánimo students, teachers and myself when the Ánimo Leadership administration violated student’s constitutional rights to free speech and assembly and tried to push thru a horrible union contract.
The Asociacíon de Maestros Unidos (AMU) had been organizing against this contract and to defend a teacher from being fired. The administration came down on students petitioning, violating their rights, harassing and intimidating them in the principal’s office, making them write affidavits (all ILLEGAL) and thinking they could get away with it because they were immigrant youth.
I came to their defense and thus I was targeted to be fired. We organized a broad campaign throughout the country of organizations, parents and students that included demonstrations at the downtown Green Dot headquarters, articles in La Opinion and won support from the National Lawyers Guild.
Marisol stood with us, defending immigrant youth's right to free speech under the Constitution of the US.
We won that fight and since then I've worked with Marisol on other issues of justice, immigrant rights, fighting police brutality.
PLEASE, VOTE NOV. 3. KEEP HER FIGHTING FOR YOU AND THE COMMUNITY ON THE LENNOX SCHOOL BOARD."
