Marisol Cruz is a lifelong Lennox resident and first generation immigrant who grew up in a union household. She was instilled with the values of improving the lives of others less fortunate and looking out for the rights of people. Ms. Cruz continues to fight for working families, economic justice in the workplace and advocating for social justice in the community.
Her upbringing in an environment of adversity and diversity allowed her to see from an insider and outsider point of view. Through her studies she came to understand that it was not by accident that the odds were against her generation and those that came before her. The disparities in her community fueled in her a sense of duty and responsibility. Being a young mother at the time of her realization, she committed to a life journey to be of service by deciding to run for public office. Ms. Cruz deeply believes that education is the ultimate equalizer and does all in her power to provide opportunities to a whole generation through quality education.
Ms. Cruz was elected to serve on the Lennox School District Board of Trustees in 2005 right after earning her B.A. in Psychology and minor in Women Studies from CSULB. At the young age of twenty five as a single mother at the time she knew through lived experience and higher education that the political is personal and the personal is political. Ms. Cruz was able to beat the odds among her generation and in doing so she inspired others to reach for their maximum potential through education, arts, and health.
As a member of the Lennox School District Board of Trustees, Cruz has worked to hold the system accountable and ensure that the children of Lennox receive the best public education. Ms. Cruz believes that it is of vital importance to create an environment of individuals who care and believe in all our children from top to bottom.
Ms. Cruz continues to be an instrument of change by developing community leadership and leveraging her experience as an elected official and grassroots activist to advance education, arts, health and wealth.
Ms Cruz is now seeking re-election as a School Board Member to keep fighting for Kids, Teachers and Staff. As a proud member of SEIU 721, she knows what it's like on the other side of the bargaining table.
This is why she stands by her record of:
- Saving Teachers Jobs by Steering cuts away from the classroom through a united front with our district unions - LTA & CSEA
- Only Board Member who Voted Against Current Budget Cuts that went deep into the Classroom and away from the Hardworking People of the District
Advocated for Parent Classes and Parent Centers
Advocated for Higher Learning by Establishing Partnerships with Local High Schools, Community Colleges and Trade Schools
Introduced the Academy of Business for Students
Going forward Ms. Cruz knows the vital importance in having a positive union partnership that thrives to create a better District for today and generations to come
